Trip 15 - Skyline Arch Distance: 0.4 miles round trip Elevation Change: 5160/5200 feet Suited For: Walk Difficulty: Easy Hazards: Negligible Introduction: This very short walk is usually bypassed by hikers bound for longer routes or the promise of solitude in the Park's backcountry. But the hike to Skyline Arch offers anyone willing to walk a close-up view of a large opening high on a sheer sandstone cliff. Features in the park are ever-changing, but most changes that visitors can experience are relatively minor. The blowing of sand and the transport of silt, sand and rocks by flash floods are the most commonly observed geological processes. But features such as arches may take many human lifetimes to develop, and rarely do we witness events that dramatically reshape the land. On such event went unobserved in November 1940, when a large block of sandstone fell from the opening of Skyline Arch, nearly doubling the size of the span. June 3, 2003 Nothing to add here.
